A Study of Placental Scanning with Indium-113m

Abstract
Hemorrhage, which is caused most frequently in the last half of pregnancy by placenta previa and abruptio placenta, occurs in about 3 per cent of all births. Its seriousness is attested not only by the obvious maternal risk but by the associated high perinatal loss.
The frequency of placenta previa is once in about 200 deliveries and various diagnostic procedures have been used such as ultrasonography, soft tissue X-ray, placental localization with radioactive isotope, amniography and angiography.
The metastable indium-113in possess biologic and physical properties desirable for placental imaging and the short half life of 100minutes and lack of beta particle emission allow relatively large quantities of radioactivity to be administered without untoward radiation to the mother or fetus.
For one year period, between Oct. 1973 & Sept., 1974, 30 cases of placental scannings with indium-113m were studied at Dept. of OB & GY, Woo Sok Hosp., College of medicine, Korea University and the results were obtained as followings;
1. Among 25 cases, which necessitated the placental scarring, 20 cases had painless vaginal bleeding, 3 cases were unstable lie and 2 cases were chosen before elective C-section. 5 additional cases of placental scanning were studied as a control group.
2. 10 cases of placental scanning, the group that had the most numbers, were taken at their gestational week between 28 to 32 weeks and 7 out of 10 were indicated because of the painless vaginal bleeding.
3 The age distribution between 26-30 years of age had the most numbered cases of 13 in 30 cases.
4. 12 of 30 cases of the placental scannings were diagnosed as the placenta previa. Among those 12 cep. 5 were diagnosed as placenta previa totalis and 7 as placenta previa partialis.
5. The accuracy of placental scanning in the study was 93.3 percent.
